Deramakot is open year-round. April–August offers the driest roads and highest mammal activity. Nov–Feb brings heavier rain but fewer visitors.

FAQ

Deramakot Forest Reserve is the most successful place in Borneo for Sunda Clouded Leopard sightings from a vehicle, as well as Marbled Cat, Sun Bear and many of Borneo's rare mammals. The reserve's road network, low vehicle traffic and healthy wildlife population create conditions found nowhere else in Borneo.
Almost all wildlife watching at Deramakot is done from a 4WD vehicle. You sit in an open safari vehicle while we drive the forest roads slowly. Optional dawn walks are on flat forest tracks suitable for most fitness levels. No trekking or hiking is required.
You stay at the Deramakot accommodation — a clean, comfortable research station with twin rooms, air conditioning, reliable electricity and a resident cook who provides all three meals daily. It's simple but well-maintained, and guests are consistently impressed by the food given the remoteness. Think comfortable eco-lodge, not luxury resort.
Fly into Sandakan airport (SDK) — the closest hub — then travel to Telupid town (approximately 2 hours by road). We meet all guests at Telupid at 2pm and transfer by 4WD into the reserve, a 2–3 hour drive. We can arrange private transfer from Sandakan on request.
We run a maximum of 6 guests per 4WD vehicle to keep noise levels low and sightings intimate. Please request a private trip if that's your preference.
Yes, for children who are genuinely wildlife-enthusiastic. Night drives run until midnight or later which is demanding for younger children. We recommend Deramakot for children aged 4 and above. Contact us to discuss and we'll advise based on your family's needs.
Send us an enquiry with your dates and group size. We confirm availability and send a detailed quote. A 30% deposit secures your dates; the balance is due 30 days before arrival. We accept bank transfer and most major payment methods.
